A shorter Kindle version of the book is available here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B085VND6TW

To celebrate 10 years of teaching novices how to create fabulous images, I have now released a printable PDF workbook, which contains everything I teach in my £135 1 day beginners’ digital photography workshop.

Subjects include:

  • What makes a good photo
  • What you need
  • Camera controls
  • Depth of field
  • Shutter speed
  • Composition
  • Black and white
  • Editing
  • Studio photography
  • Taking it further
  • Photography tips from a professional

There’s no comparison to 1-1 time with an experienced professional, however as not everyone is able to join me, I have decided to offer the same expert tuition in an accessible format.

There’s no waffle or padding, and no unexplained jargon, and no ‘rules’ of photography. Just what you need to do to take control of your camera and create the sort of images you have always wanted to.

For a limited time I am also offering a downloadable guide to choosing a camera, for free with each download.

Taking digital photos is easy. But how often do you dare to turn off the Auto function on your camera? Together we can unlock the full potential of your creativity.

I have been photographing weddings for 10 years, and for the last 5 year, teaching people like you how to take control of their camera, and achieve results they didn’t think they were capable of.

Lessons can be run as a 1 to 1 or a group session – you choose.

Informal – inspiring – fun!

I run digital photography training workshops for complete beginners through to competent photographers looking to expand their knowledge.

Working in one of the UK’s most photogenic locations, I help you develop your natural photographer’s eye and discover your own unique style.

You will learn how to get the very best from your camera for shooting beautiful scenery, working with life models or simply capturing that special moment.

Workshops and courses

A full range of digital photography lessons and workshops for small groups (no more than five to ensure everyone gets full attention) and as 1-to-1 sessions.

From intensive 90-minute tutorials to full-day excursions, I can tailor your training workshop to your needs and preferred location.

Weekdays, evenings, weekends, in the city or out on location – whatever it takes to inspire your creativity!

York is a fantastic place to learn more about you and your camera. With an expert guide at your side, you’ll discover all kinds of photo opportunities you’ve never even noticed before!

Equipment

Perhaps you’ve been given an expensive camera and want to learn how to use it? Or maybe you simply want to master the camera on your smartphone? Either way, there is an ideal workshop or lesson for you.

Most people attend training with a Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, but any camera with selective focusing and exposure controls is fine. I use a Canon 70D, with 10-18. 24-105L and 70-200L lenses.

My 1 to 1 lessons are either 2 hour introductions (£75) or 4 hours masterclass (£135). We cover as much as is needed to leave you confident and enthused. My 4 hour Masterclass also includes an editing lesson on Lightroom, which is an affordable and easy to use application. Just a few tweaks will transform your photography.

Masterclasses in York Leeds and Harrogate.

I now offer a Masterclass+ course, the same 1 to 1 thorough photography and editing lesson, with a 2 hour follow-up evening lesson, for just £200.

FAQs

FAQs

What is the best way to learn photography?

We all learn differently. Some of us like to take our time (it took me years!) and read through books/blog. Many people learn best by doing. My workshops are a mix of theory with examples, and hands-on practice. For those who like to read to learn, my ebook covers everything I teach on a full masterclass.

What do I need to bring?

Suitable clothes (especially for night shoots, it’s colder than you think when standing around!). Obviously your camera, all lenses you have, and anything you would like to know more about.

Can I bring someone with me?

I realise that meeting a stranger to walk around town in the dark may be off-putting! With this in mind I have a unique offer. Bring a friend with you for free. I do 1 to 1 training, however you may wish to bring some moral support. 4 ears are better than 2!

Where will we be going?

My evening sessions take place around York. Depending on the time of year we usually include The Shambles, York Minster, and the river. Masterclasses are based in a city centre hotel, with practice around York.

How long is it?

Evening sessions are 2 hours. Masterclasses 4 hours.

Do I get anything at the end of the course?

By the end of the day you will have an understanding of:

  • Camera controls
  • Focusing
  • Exposure
  • Depth of Field
  • Shutter Speed
  • ISO
  • Composition
  • Black and White
  • Street Photography
  • Editing

You will also be sent the latest version of my digital photography ebook, which is an invaluable aide memoire, as you will learn a lot on the day!
