FAQs

What is the best way to learn photography?

We all learn differently. Some of us like to take our time (it took me years!) and read through books/blog. Many people learn best by doing. My workshops are a mix of theory with examples, and hands-on practice. For those who like to read to learn, my ebook covers everything I teach on a full masterclass.

What do I need to bring?

Suitable clothes (especially for night shoots, it’s colder than you think when standing around!). Obviously your camera, all lenses you have, and anything you would like to know more about.

Can I bring someone with me?

I realise that meeting a stranger to walk around town in the dark may be off-putting! With this in mind I have a unique offer. Bring a friend with you for free. I do 1 to 1 training, however you may wish to bring some moral support. 4 ears are better than 2!

Where will we be going?

My evening sessions take place around York. Depending on the time of year we usually include The Shambles, York Minster, and the river. Masterclasses are based in a city centre hotel, with practice around York.

How long is it?

Evening sessions are 2 hours. Masterclasses 4 hours.

Do I get anything at the end of the course?

By the end of the day you will have an understanding of:

  • Camera controls
  • Focusing
  • Exposure
  • Depth of Field
  • Shutter Speed
  • ISO
  • Composition
  • Black and White
  • Street Photography
  • Editing

You will also be sent the latest version of my digital photography ebook, which is an invaluable aide memoire, as you will learn a lot on the day!
